Papers from the Office of the Proctor [manuscript], 1811-1905 (bulk 1817-1826).

Earliest papers concern Thomas Jefferson and the building of the University of Virginia. The papers contain 13 manuscripts in Jefferson's hand and 19 others relating to the early history of the University, plus 12 additional papers from the Proctor's Office. The papers contain correspondence regarding the construction of the University; a statement showing the cost of the marble Corinthian and Ionic capitals; specifications for four pavilions; and specifications and estimate for brick. Also enactments relating to the constitution and government of the University....1831, and supplement, 1836; a weekly class report for Ancient Languages, 1836; and receipts, 1843, 1845. Of interest is a report from William A. Pratt, architect and engineer, 1858 August 31, presenting a plan for heating the Rotunda and Public Hall annex with furnaces instead of the stoves currently in use.
